Nine Salisbury residents were recognized by township commissioners Wednesday evening, April 16, for their long records of volunteer service to the community.

Introducing the ceremony was township Manager Gabriel Khalife. Praising the long tradition of service in Salisbury Township, Khalife said that “volunteerism in this township helps keep us together as a community.”

Four township commissioners introduced the volunteers and presented a short biography of their service.

Commissioner James Brown presented a certificate of commendation and volunteer recognition pin Daniel Moyer, a 22-year township resident who served for five years on the township’s Zoning Hearing Board.

Brown also recognized Peter Johnson who has been a volunteer for the Hamilton Park Youth Organization for 14 years. He served as a coach with the Junior Prep teams, and older teams as needed. He is vice president of the organization’s executive board.

Brown said Johnson has also worked behind the scenes with preparation of ball fields, equipment management, player evaluations and team assignments.

Commissioner Norma Cusick cited Charles Beck, a long-time Salisbury resident, for serving as a member of the township Planning Commission for more than 21 years.

Cusick also recognized Randy Moyer for seven years of service to the Salisbury Youth Association. Moyer variously served as vice president, in-house baseball director, T-Ball and concession stand coordinator and as a baseball, wrestling and soccer coach.

He also served for seven years with the Falcon Wrestling Club, and is currently a board member of the Salisbury Recreation Committee, where he has been a member for more than two years.

Commissioner Robert Martucci cited Keith Cunningham for 38 years of fire service in the township. Cunningham served in the former River Road Fire Department as junior fire assistant chief, junior fire chief, deputy chief, assistant chief, chief, and training officer.

He also served as photographer for River Road and Eastern Salisbury Fire & Rescue.

Martucci recognized Joe Harakal as a sustaining factor of the Salisbury Youth Association wrestling program. Harakal has been an SYA wrestling coach for 10 years, and served as program director for six years, and co-director for two years.

He is a 10-year member of the Middle Atlantic Wrestling Association, and has been co-director of that group’s district wrestling tournament for the past eight years.

He has also served as a T-ball and softball coach.

Commissioner Larry Unger recognized three long-time volunteer residents.

Leroy Hopper, at 88 years of age, has a long tradition of service to scouting. For the past five years Hopper has served as Webelos Den Leader and assistant cub master for Cub Scout Pack 146, which meets at Jerusalem Evangelical Lutheran Church on Church Rd. in the township.

Hopper served in various scout leadership positions in Emmaus and in Paterson, N.J. He also visits local schools as the anti-litter crusader Woodsy Owl.

William DiGiacomo was recognized for many years of service to the Hamilton Park Athletic Association. He was baseball coach with the Junior Prep Youth Program, Midgets, Knee-High, and Junior teams, and has served on the group’s board of directors for a number of years.

DiGiacomo also served behind the scenes repairing backstops, building player benches, dragging ball fields, and showing up whenever paining or repair work was needed.

Mrs. Cindy Bubenko was cited for nine years of service to the Salisbury Youth Association where she is bookkeeper and treasurer.

She was co-director of the T-ball program for two years, co-director of the SYA concession stand for one year, T-ball coach for three years and basketball coach for one year. She serves as Team Mom for cheerleading or football for five years.

Additionally, she is a member and treasurer of the Salisbury High School Football Booster Club, a homecoming committee member.

Since 1997, Mrs. Bubenko assisted with field trips and class functions for Harry S Truman Elementary School and the Salisbury Middle School.

After the ceremony, honorees and their families were hosted to a light buffet by the township.

The volunteer recognition program was initiated five years ago by Ward 2 Commissioner Larry Unger.
