LIBRARY REFERENDUM

Attention Salisbury Residents:

On November 5, 2013 you will be asked to vote either for or against a Library Referendum question whether to continue funding the participation of Salisbury Township in the Allentown Public Library system. For starters, the initial referendum approved in 1992 allowed the Township to levy a dedicated tax of .18 mills, equivalent to .0068 currently in place following the countywide 2012 reassessment.  The Board of Commissioners decided that the issue should be revisited and to allow the residents to weigh in on whether to continue this dedicated tax for providing library services to all residents. Currently, each property owner pays a portion of their taxes based on their current assessment.

For example, if your property is assessed at $207,000, your share of the cost for library services amounts to $12.06 a year. This varies based on your assessment. If you are assessed at $150,000, then the cost will be $9.13 a year. If you are assessed at $400,000, then your cost will be $24.35 a year. If voters decide not to continue the tax, each resident who would want to utilize library services would need to join independently and pay for membership. Currently the Allentown Library charges $40 for a nonresident card.
